Flying and Gliding

 Powered Flying

Cadets have the opportunity to fly in Grob Tutor, the primary trainers of the RAF at one of 12 Air Experience Flights, where they are shown how the aircraft flies and given the chance to control the aeroplane, experience aerobatics or simply admire the view. Cadets also have the opportunity to fly in other aircraft in service in the RAF when they visit local RAF Stations or when they go on annual camp to an RAF flying station.

Cadets may wish to be put forward for an RAF Flying Scholarship. This includes training both on the ground and around 20 hours of free flying, including 5 hours solo flying. Usually the scholarship is seen as a first step towards obtaining your Private Pilots Licence (PPL) and towards a flying career.

  Gliding

A Gliding experience

On their Initial Flight each cadets is given a full briefing on what to expect during the flight, which is designed to get the cadet used to gliding, and to show them local sites of interest.  The next stage provides the opportunity to learn how to operate the glider itself.  They experience practical flying training, and instructors ensure this is a pleasurable experience rather than a demanding task, leaving the cadet with a thirst for more.

Finally, the Gliding Scholarship gives cadets an opportunity to undergo further training to achieve their Gliding Wings.  The course consists of up 8 hours in a glider, and cadets showing the necessary aptitude are invited to progress to the 'solo' standard and gain their Solo Wings.
